Emission-free fleet on January 1, 2025 is not feasible, think 70 percent of companies

About 70 percent of companies that regularly supply city centers indicate that it is not feasible to have a completely emission-free fleet by 1 January 2025. 11 percent indicate that this will succeed and 19 percent do not yet know whether they will make it.

This is apparent from research by Techniek Nederland and evofenedex among their joint supporters. In this research, the respondents were asked questions about the level of knowledge, communication from the government and the expectations of entrepreneurs for the future with regard to zero emissions.

Vehicle range still too small
Two reasons that are often mentioned according to the researchers are the high purchase price and the limited range of the vehicles. In addition, it also emerges that the range of vehicles – with or without a special construction – is too small. There is some hope in the transitional arrangements that the government is currently offering.

Alternatives to our own emission-free fleet
To increase the feasibility of an emission-free fleet, companies are looking for alternatives. About a quarter of those surveyed are in favor of leasing zero-emission vehicles. Another alternative is to use a hub on the outskirts of the city. There, carriers can deliver goods, which are then brought into the city by a service provider emission-free. Research by Techniek Nederland and evofenedex shows that just under 30 percent of entrepreneurs are interested in this. The same percentage sees value in sharing delivery vans and/or lorries with colleagues from the area.

Not yet aware of zero-emission zones
However, it appears that many companies have not yet taken action in this area. 60 percent of the respondents say that they have not yet been informed by municipalities about the introduction of zero-emission zones by 2025. Only 8 percent indicate that they have been informed and that the information provided was clear.

Privileges for zero-emission vehicles
The researchers therefore conclude that municipalities should provide clarity as soon as possible about the date of introduction of zero-emission zones and their size. They can also respond to the great need among local entrepreneurs to set certain privileges for zero-emission vehicles, such as extended loading and unloading times.
